Waksman Student Scholars Program (Rutgers)
About
The Waksman Student Scholars Program pairs high school teachers and their students with Rutgers' Waksman Institute of Microbiology to conduct authentic, publishable genomic-sequence research on the duckweed Landoltia punctata, beginning with a summer training institute and continuing as a class or club project during the academic year. Students learn molecular biology techniques including PCR, DNA purification, and bioinformatic sequence analysis (BLAST) alongside a research scientist mentor. WSSP now includes more than 50 partner schools and roughly 1,400 students nationally.
