FIT is a SUNY college built around one industry: fashion, beauty, and the businesses that run them, taught two blocks from Manhattan's Garment District. What gets you in depends on which of its four schools you apply to: portfolio review for design majors, file review for business, art history and the sciences. FIT also runs many students through an associate degree first, a two-year on-ramp instead of a straight four-year path.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY
A design school run by New Yorkers who mostly go home at night

FIT's own residence halls, on West 27th and 31st Streets in Chelsea, house about 2,300 students; most of FIT's roughly 7,600 undergraduates commute, so daily life leans on studio hours, clubs, and the fashion industry itself more than a residential quad. How FIT feels depends heavily on your major: design students effectively live in the studio, while business and liberal-arts students move through a more ordinary class schedule. Being two blocks from the Garment District means real industry access starts early, guest critiques, internships, and adjunct faculty who work in the industry by day, a texture aggregate student reviews and FIT's own student paper, W27, both point to as the defining feature of going here.
