Temple calls itself Philadelphia's public university, founded as a night school in 1884, and that still shapes it: 600+ programs, R1 status, a main campus in North Philadelphia. Its Rome campus, opened 1966 near the Spanish Steps, is one of the oldest American study-abroad programs in Italy. The tradeoff students weigh honestly: the campus sits in a neighborhood with real crime concerns, and how safe you feel varies by who you ask.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY
A real city campus, and a real safety conversation

Temple's Main Campus sits in North Philadelphia, and Temple's own independent student paper, The Temple News, doesn't dodge what that means: a survey of roughly 470 students found only 8% felt very safe on campus, about 45% felt safe, and the paper has run both investigative pieces on campus crime and opinion pieces arguing that fear of the surrounding neighborhood is overstated and unevenly applied. What consistently balances it out in aggregate student sentiment: food trucks and a strong club scene on Main Campus, the free Owl Loop shuttle and SEPTA connecting students to the rest of Philadelphia, and a campus culture students describe as tight-knit despite the wider city around it.
