Every writing prompt on the University of Florida application, with word limits. All of it taken from the application itself. 6 prompts, including program-specific ones.

  • Prompt 1Required650 words max

    Tell us about yourself

The essay helps our admissions staff get to know you better. Use this space to tell us something about yourself that we wouldn't learn elsewhere in your application.
  • Prompt 2Required250 words max

    Most meaningful commitment

Please provide more details on your most meaningful commitment outside of the classroom while in high school and explain why it was meaningful.
  • Prompt 3Optional250 words max

    Outside obligations

Do you have any employment or family obligations that limit your participation in extracurricular activities? If so, please describe.

    How to approach it

This one works best zoomed all the way in. One meeting, one build, one shift, told in detail. The reader already saw your activities list. Show them what it felt like to do the work.

  • Prompt 4Optional250 words max

    College-prep programs

Have you participated in or been assisted in your college preparation and search by programs outside of the classroom, such as Educational Talent Search, Take Stock in Children, Upward Bound, Boys and Girls Club, etc.?
  • Prompt 5Optional250 words max

    Extenuating circumstances

Is there any additional information or extenuating circumstances the Admissions Committee should know when reviewing your application?

    How to approach it

This space is for context, not a bonus essay. Use it if something needs explaining. A grade dip, or a commitment that limited your activities. Say it plainly in a few sentences. Otherwise leave it empty. Empty reads better than padding.

These prompts are program-specific.

They apply only if you’re applying to the named program or school.

  • UF Honors ProgramRequired400 words max

    Honors Program essay

The UF Honors Program's mission is to connect, nurture and engage the next generation of scholars who change the world. How do you envision yourself contributing to this mission?

    How to approach it

This is the most literal question on the application. Why this training, for your goals. Answer in that order. Name the goal first. Then point to the two or three parts of the program that serve it. Then show one thing you’ve already done that proves the goal is real.
