Overview
The University of Maine is the state's land-grant and Sea Grant research flagship, built on 160 years of agricultural and marine science. Its Composites Center holds Guinness World Records for the largest 3D-printed boat and polymer 3D printer, feeding straight into Maine's aerospace, defense and marine industries. With a 97% admit rate, the real filter isn't getting in, it's choosing a land-grant research culture over a name-brand one.

Every first-year lives on campus in one of UMaine's Themed Communities, from a Substance Free floor to Army/Navy ROTC housing in Knox Hall, and UMaine's own page notes over 60% of undergraduates eventually move off campus. Jordan Thompson, writing in The Maine Campus, UMaine's independent student paper, said he doesn't think he'd be "nearly as involved" if he'd moved off campus like most upperclassmen do. Once people scatter, hockey and the outdoors hold the place together instead: students genuinely pack the student section for Division I hockey, and the 15-plus miles of on-campus trails see steady traffic. "Wicked friendly" is a common refrain in student reviews, usually paired with complaints about aging dining halls and housing.
