UW is what a massive public research budget looks like from the inside: more federal research dollars than any other public university, three campuses anchored by Seattle, and 33,000-plus undergrads at the Seattle campus alone. Nothing here is built around one shared experience; at a 20:1 student-faculty ratio, finding your specific lab, program, or community takes real initiative.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY
A commuter campus that blooms once a year

UW's own student-life page frames campus around finding your people: dorms, Greek housing, wellness and safety resources, and hundreds of registered student organizations. Roughly seventy percent of Huskies commute, and UW's own student newspaper argues community here forms in niches, by major, RSO, or dorm floor, rather than as one shared campus culture. "No one will be here to hold your hand" is a common refrain in student reviews, and one review called the campus "large scale yet personable." Weekdays are busy; weekends genuinely empty out as local students go home. Each spring, thousands come to the Quad to watch its Yoshino cherry trees bloom, one of the few moments the whole campus shows up at once.

Summarized by Spike from what students write: UW Student Life, The Daily, UW News — Cherry Blossoms.
