Why UW Honors
Based on your preliminary review of the UW Honors College curriculum, requirements and opportunities, (or your visit if you were able to do so!), what aspects of the program appeal to you most?
How to approach it. This is a why-us prompt. The trap is describing the school back to itself. Rankings and a pretty campus read as filler. Name two or three things you’d actually use. A program, a professor’s work, an open curriculum. Then tie each one to something you’ve already done.
A problem worth solving
Describe a problem you've solved or would like to solve. It can be a personal or intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma, or a community concern.
How to approach it. This prompt wants the origin story and the proof, not your resume. Pick the moment the interest became yours. Show one or two things you did about it on your own. Let the school see how you think when nobody assigns the work.
A quotation that matters
Share a meaningful quotation from a book, a song, a film, etc., and explain why it is important to you.
Pick a quotation
Choose one of the following quotations and explain how it aligns with your thinking: "It is what we think we know already that often prevents us from learning." (Claude Bernard); "Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it." (Marian Wright Edelman); "How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." (Anne Frank)
How to approach it. Here, specific beats important. A small, true community described from the inside beats a broad label. Write it as someone who was there, not as an observer. End on what you carry into a campus, not on a moral.
Show, don't just tell
Share a short video, PowerPoint, or presentation of a project demonstrating commitment to Honors priorities.
